I first got the whole idea for Parachutes & Paper Planes over a year ago. I’m not gonna explain the whole concept of the title, but this album has been a long time coming. Mistakes & Heartaches was probably the grittiest album ever made. Not only was it just dark and depressing (which I’m proud of, I needed it to be. It was very accurate), but it was recorded in my basement, and I didn’t even pretend to mix or master any of the tracks. It was really homemade. So going into Parachutes & Paper Planes, I definitely wanted to make something that was a much higher quality. I took my time to make sure everything sounded right, and mixed it all up nice. So basically, this is the best it’s going to get with the equipment I have. I’d like to think it’s pretty well made. Also, in the past I’ve relied heavily on samples. I wanted to step outside of my comfort zone with this one, so I believe that there’s only one (maybe 2, I don’t remember) samples on the whole album. I played the rest myself.
To this point, all the music I’ve made has been very much about my life. Maybe not always literally, but it’s definitely come from something I’ve felt or been through. I needed to take a break from dissecting myself for a little bit, so Parachutes & Paper Planes was never supposed to be inspired by my life. The majority of the album is instrumental, but the couple tracks that do have vocals are pure fantasy. It’s like a movie. I made it all up. It’s not real. It’s not about me. I just thought it would be interesting or make you think. Don’t over-analyze.
